Romantic Advice – #MFRWHooks

by J.J. DiBenedetto

This morning I’ve got an excerpt from a different book series for my BookHooks – this is from the Jane Barnaby Adventures.  Mostly in these books Jane finds herself involved in international intrigue and some self-inflicted trouble.  But she finds time for her love life, too – as do her neighbors…

When she got back to the table, old Mrs. Parlato fixed her gaze on her.  “You’re not yourself today, Jane.  It’s your friend, isn’t it?  Your father told us about her getting engaged.”  Jane knew what was coming next, and her elderly neighbor didn’t disappoint.  “It’s about time you got married yourself, Jane.  I got married when I was twenty.  Teresa here,” she waved a gnarled hand towards Mr. Parlato’s wife, “was eighteen when she married my son.  It was good enough for us, it’s good enough for you kids today.  You’re a smart girl, Jane, you ought to know this already.”

Jane did know it; she heard it every time she set foot in this house.  She didn’t take offense, though.  She knew her neighbor meant well, and that, old-fashioned as her advice was, it was given in love.  “I’m working on it, Mrs. Parlato.  I promise.”

“What about that nice boy you met in college?  Your father said he came to England to visit you.  Boys don’t get on a plane and fly to another country to see you if they’re not serious, Jane.”

Now everyone was staring at her.  She hadn’t told her father or Cassie about her fight – if that was what it was – with Mark.  “I know.  It’s just complicated, that’s all.”  She didn’t want to continue this conversation any further, but she could think of no way to change the subject, so she endured another few minutes of well-meaning advice that properly belonged back in the 1950’s.  Or possibly the 1850’s.

Losers Weepers is the second book in the Jane Barnaby Adventures:

A young woman in a coat stands in an attic filled with wooden crates; the book title "Losers Weepers: A Jane Barnaby Adventure" by J.J. DiBenedetto appears above her.

Jane Barnaby had everything going her way: a prestigious internship at the Museum of Natural History, a fantastic Upper West Side sublet apartment, and helping plan her newly-engaged college friend’s wedding.

Until a casual lunch with her friend’s fiancé set off alarm bells, and sent her digging into the rabbit hole that is his past.

When that rabbit hole leads Jane and her on-again, off-again boyfriend to the English countryside, uncovering secrets dating back to World War 2, searching for priceless art treasures looted by the Nazis, and fighting off the thieves who will kill to get those treasures for themselves, will they discover the truth, or lose their lives?

  1. I am one of the youngest female cousins of many with several aunties. Several. You humor the dears. Love this little trip down memory lane for me.

  2. Jane has two options–get married already, or stop visiting her neighbor. I highly doubt she’ll do the latter, so she’ll be biting her tongue for a while yet. The sounds like an interesting mystery, especially since the rabbit hole leads to the WWII era.
